Marbles vs Reflect: daily notes and backlinks, or no filing at all

Reflect’s model, briefly

Open the app and you are in today’s note. Write into it. When you mention a person or a topic, you wrap it in brackets and it becomes a page, and that page collects every other day you mentioned it. Over a year this produces something genuinely valuable, and it is fast and pleasant to use while it happens.

It is the Roam idea, cleaned up and made reliable, and it works for the people it works for.

The bracket is the whole question

Everything above depends on you typing the brackets. If you do, Reflect gives you a connected set of notes. If you skip them for a fortnight, those two weeks are a plain diary, and the connections that would have been there are simply not.

The bracket is a small ask at a desk. It is a larger ask on a phone, and a much larger one in the specific moment most notes get written, which is halfway out of a conversation with your attention already somewhere else.

Marbles is a bet that this step is where linked note taking loses most of the people who try it, and that the step can be removed rather than made easier. A few seconds after you write “coffee with Sam, she is leaving Figma in March”, Sam has a page and the note is on it, with a date attached to the fact. No brackets, no autocomplete, no decision.

The cost is that Marbles can be wrong about what a note is about, and Reflect cannot, because you told it. Marbles handles this by showing its work: every line on a person’s page links to the note it came from, and anything it is unsure about it asks you rather than filing silently.

The encryption difference, plainly

Reflect encrypts your notes end to end. Marbles does not make that claim and cannot, because the organizing step sends the text of your notes to an AI provider under a contract that bars storing or training on them.

That is a real difference and it belongs near the top of this page rather than buried at the bottom. What Marbles does instead is narrower: your notes are stored on your phone and in your own iCloud rather than on a server we run, there is no account to create, and anything shaped like a password, a key or a card number is caught before it can be sent anywhere, permanently and by construction.

Those are different promises. If end to end encryption of everything is the requirement, Reflect meets it and Marbles does not.

The honest summary

Reflect is the better app if you already keep a daily note and you like typing links, or if encryption decides it. Marbles is the better bet if you have tried the bracket habit and watched it lapse, and you would rather the app did that part.
