Marbles vs Notion: a workspace you build, or notes that file themselves
Notion gives you the tools to build any structure you can imagine. Marbles assumes you are never going to build one.
Two different products that both say “notes”
Notion is a construction kit. Give it an afternoon and a clear head and you can build something genuinely good: a reading list with properties, a project board that rolls up, a wiki your team actually reads. The ceiling is very high.
The floor is the problem. A Notion workspace does not work until you have decided how it should work, and it stops working the week you stop maintaining it. Everyone who has used it for more than a year has an abandoned database in there somewhere with three entries from the enthusiastic first weekend.
Marbles does not have a ceiling like that, and it does not have that floor either. There is nothing to design. You write notes and it reads them.
Capture is where the difference bites
Notion is a document tool wearing a notes app’s clothes. Opening it to jot a half thought means waiting for a page to load, choosing where the page goes, and then writing into a document that syncs as you type. On a phone, on a train, that is enough friction to lose the thought.
This is not a bug in Notion. It is what a shared, structured, multiplayer workspace costs. But it means the messy fragments never get written down in the first place, and the messy fragments are most of what anyone actually thinks.
What organizing means in each
In Notion, organizing means putting a page in the right database with the right properties, and you are the one doing it. The structure is explicit, which is exactly why it is powerful and exactly why it decays.
In Marbles nothing is explicit. You write “coffee with Sam, she is leaving Figma in March” and a few seconds later that note is attached to Sam’s page, grouped with the other notes about her, and the fact has a date on it. You did not choose a database. There is no database to choose.
The tradeoff is real: you cannot make Marbles produce a filtered view of everything tagged Q3 with status blocked, because there are no tags and no statuses. If that sentence describes something you need, you need Notion.
The honest summary
If your problem is coordination, use Notion. If your problem is that you think in fragments on a phone and cannot find them again six months later, Notion will make it worse, because it asks you to file at the exact moment you have the least patience for filing.
What Notion is better at
- Structured data. Databases, properties, relations, views and filters have no equivalent in Marbles and are not planned.
- Teams. Shared pages, comments, permissions and a wiki everyone edits. Marbles has no multiplayer mode at all.
- It runs everywhere. Web, Mac, Windows, iPad, Android. Marbles is an iPhone app.
- Publishing. A Notion page can be a public site in one click.
- Templates and an enormous community of them, which is a genuine head start Marbles cannot match.

Which one you want
Stay with Notion if
You are organizing work rather than thoughts, other people need to see it, or the structure itself is the value: a content calendar, a CRM, a project tracker.
Try Marbles if
You do not want to design a system. You want to write things down on your phone and have them turn out to be findable later.
